Native Gmail filters or Mail Genie?

By Mail Genie · Reviewed

Free native Gmail filters are a good fit when you know exactly which sender, recipient, or subject should trigger an action. Mail Genie may help when you want to review broader choices about what stays in Inbox and have AI apply that policy to eligible mail. The tradeoff is paid service, additional Gmail access, and consented AI processing that can make mistakes.

Compare the decisions you want to make

Reviewed October 15, 2026. Native-filter facts follow Google’s filter instructions and search operator reference. Mail Genie’s setup explanation, billing terms, and Privacy Policy describe its product and processing.

Gmail access and AICreated inside Gmail; this workflow does not connect Mail Genie or another filtering service.Requires Gmail authorization and consent to send relevant email content for AI processing.
MistakesCriteria can be too broad, too narrow, or stop matching a changed sender.AI can misclassify mail or apply a policy differently from what you intended.
RecoveryEdit the filter and retrieve archived mail separately. Removing a rule does not undo old actions.Restore conversations and adjust preferences. New Black Hole deliveries are marked read; restoration does not promise unread status.

Choose native filters for stable, specific patterns

If your goal is “put this publication in Reading” or “label mail sent to my project alias,” a native filter may be sufficient. You can inspect its criteria and use a label-only rule before adding archive behavior. Start with the six documented-syntax recipes or the complete newsletter workflow.

This comparison concerns user-created filters. Gmail also has built-in intelligence beyond these rules. Mail Genie does not replace Gmail’s spam protection.

Choose category decisions when individual rules become hard to maintain

Mail Genie groups choices into Personal & support, Security & action required, Receipts & records, Newsletters & reading, and Promotions & general notices. You review what stays and what is archived before activating filtering. These are policy choices, not a guarantee that every message will be understood correctly.

Connecting Gmail or granting AI consent does not activate filtering. Setup analyzes consented content before activation. Once activated, Black Hole archives conversations out of Inbox rather than deleting them, and new Black Hole deliveries are marked read. Check the results and restore conversations when needed.

Understand the processing and stopping controls

With permission, relevant sender, subject, message text, and limited thread context are sent to TypeSafe Jev through Vercel AI Gateway for classification; Anthropic Claude handles setup and learning. Mail Genie retains settings, processing metadata, and limited correction evidence. Read the Privacy Policy before connecting.

Withdraw AI consent in Settings to stop processing. That does not cancel billing or restore archived mail. Manage or cancel the subscription separately in Settings; ordinary cancellation stops renewal and keeps access through the paid period.

Try the decision before choosing the service
